You guys in the US seem to have a wider choice of ambu bags, than we do here in the UK. In fact ive had to buy bvm’s from the states because certain ones are not available, and things like built in manometers seem slow to take off here. Keep up the good work and stay safe, and oh yes, i didnt know despite 30 years service on the ambulances, what the term ambu stood for.
Many thanks

Hello Joy,

Our resident expert says:
The correct size BVM and mask are crucial to delivering effective ventilation to a patient in respiratory arrest. The mask should be sized to cover the bridge of the nose and seat on the chin. The correct size BVM should correlate to the size of the patient, i.e an infant BVM should be used for an infant. There really isn’t a guideline or algorithm used to select the proper bag, the rule of thumb is if they are considered a child use a child BVM with the correct size mask, infant same way.

I hope this helps.

I have a background in pediatric home healthcare. Is there a guideline as to calculating the correct size ambu bag for a patient? Thank you for your time.

As the manufacturer has deemed this device one-time-use, and abiding by FDA regulations, we would advise they be disposed of after use.

I’m a midwifeary student and we have this debate going on in regards to one time use bags. Why are they one time use? If you switch out the mask and cabin wipe the device what is the potential infection control issues that can arise in infant only use? Can adding a filter component make it reusable?
