How do I know when my AED’s battery needs to be replaced?

Your AED Battery may need to be replaced if any of the following occurs:

  • The AED beeps
  • The AED fails self-checks
  • The AED Has a failing status indicator (red light or mark)
  • The AED does not have enough power to operate

The life of an AED battery can vary depending on the manufacturer. Most AED batteries need to be replaced every 2 – 5 years.

Hi Phyllis,

It depends on the AED you have. Give our customer service department a call at 1-800-544-0048 and they will be more than happy to help you with any questions you may have about your AED. Thanks!

Our fire department uses Zoll AED Plus’s. Last night we ran a full arrest and shocked the patient 4 times. Wondering if we need to replace batteries, don’t want to wait for an equipment failure.

Hi Bill, We’re sorry to hear the patient didn’t make it. If the indicator on the ZOLL AED is showing a green check-mark then your unit should be fully functional and able to rescue. There are many reasons a patient may not respond to a shock – most having to do with the physiology of the patient’s heart and time from drop to shock. If you feel you should change the batteries, that is done easily enough on the ZOLL AED Plus as it uses 10 consumer Duracell Lithium 123 batteries. They are available for purchase here.

How long does the LifePak 1000 AED batteries last? We’ve had it since 6/12/2019. Luckily we haven’t had to use it. The window indicator has 4 bars and reads OK. Will the bars go down one by one? Should they be replaced routinely?

Hi Sarah,

The LIFEPAK 1000 non-rechargeable battery should be good for 5 years if unused in your AED.

If the AED is used in a resuscitation, do lithium 123 batteries automatically need to be replaced like the CPR pad does?

You may not have to replace the batteries right away, but please understand that they have been depleted and a spare set should be on hand.

Hi.
We recently ordered replacement battery packs for our units. Two of the three were backordered, but I installed the 9-volt battery into the battery pack, then installed the pack into the unit. I received a “7010” service code”, and the unit’s light began double-flashing red and beeping. Could this be a bad 9-volt battery issue? Our units are the “Defibtech Lifeline AED.”
Thank you.

Hi Ana! If you do not place your AED batteries in the device correctly, the device may continue to beep or not update the AED Status to a green light, meaning maintenance is still required. If you have any other questions, please refer to your specific device’s owner’s manual, as it should have specific guidelines that fit your device’s needs. Or feel free to reach out to our customer care team at [email protected] for assistance! Thank you for your comment!
