Is my AED functioning correctly?

To determine if your AED is functioning correctly, examine the device for a status indicator light. The status indicator light is usually a check mark or flashing light that signifies the AED has passed its self-check. Successful self-checks on your AED are what let you know the device is functioning normally.

All AEDs run these self-checks (some daily, some weekly, some monthly), which automatically make sure your AED is functioning properly. Because the AED is performing this automatic self-check, you do not need to turn the device on and off to make sure it’s working. In fact, manually turning the AED unit on and off to check its status will drain the battery, thus reducing its useful life.

Hello Jean,
This must be a training AED as Preston does not produce a rescue AED. Is it possible you have the scenario set to fully automatic? Check your user manual on how to reset your model or change the scenario. If you cannot find your user manual, find your model trainer on our website and the manual should be available for download in the Resources section at the bottom of the page.

If the Zoll AED Plus automatically runs self-checks, what are my legal obligations towards the AED Maintenance Checklist which states I should turn on the machine and check it as often as weekly or at least monthly? On this page you claim that because the AED is performing this automatic self-check, you do not need to turn the device on and off to make sure it’s working. In fact, manually turning the AED unit on and off to check its status will drain the battery, thus reducing its useful life. How do I know if my AED does automatic self-checks?

All AEDs do self-tests, some more thorough than others. Your ZOLL AED Plus does a monthly self-test which covers the internal circuitry, the battery level, and that the pads are connected.
