During a segment on the Today show, Dr. Oz explains to Matt Lauer the importance and simplicity of hands-only CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) use – and why AEDs should be as ubiquitous as fire extinguishers.
The math is not complicated. Over 350,000 people die as a result of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) every year in the US. AEDs are the only treatment for SCA. So logically, if there are more AEDs available in more locations, more lives can be saved. It’s a very simple equation.

Unfortunately, your question doesn’t have a simple answer. The bottom line is it really depends on many factors including the overall health of the elderly patient, whether the cause of the sudden cardiac arrest is one of the two rhythms detected by the AED (Ventricular Fibrillation or Pulseless Ventricular Tachycardia), or if the patient is already in asystole (flat-lining). As AEDs are most effective when used in conjunction with CPR, consideration should be given to the fragility of a patient. There is a section on aging populations which addresses this issue here.
