Summary

An AED acquirer must take reasonable measures to ensure that any person considered to be an anticipated AED user receives CPR/AED training, and must take reasonable measures to ensure the AED is used by only trained users. Such an acquirer must register the AED with an agent of the local EMS system, notifying that agent of the existence, location, and type of the AED.

The AED must be maintained and tested according to the manufacturer's guidelines.

Good Samaritan protection is extended to gratuitous good faith rescuers. This protection also extends to physicians who authorize the purchase of an AED; AED trainers; and owners, occupiers, and managers of premises where an AED is located.

Physical fitness facilities, including outdoor facilities, must have an AED on site and at least one trained AED user on staff during certain activities and events.

Dental offices that administer anesthesia or sedation must have an AED on the premises.

Licensed horse racing facilities must have at least 2 AEDs on the premises.

Each sheriff's office and certain police departments must have an AED on site.

The law requires training in CPR/AED to be a part of the secondary school curriculum in the state.

Facilities performing moderate or deep sedation or general anesthesia are required to have an AED on the premises.

410 ILCS 4/15 Training Requirements 2018-02-14 (a) The Department shall adopt rules regarding the establishment of programs to train individuals as trained AED users. Rules regarding the establishment of programs to train individuals as trained AED users shall specify the following: (1) The curriculum of any program to train individuals shall include complete training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (commonly referred to as “CPR”) prepared according to nationally recognized guidelines. (2) The qualifications necessary for any individuals to teach a program to train an individual as a trained AED user. (3) The time period for which training recognition shall be valid, and the recommendation for subsequent renewal. (b) In carrying out subsection (a), the Department shall identify an appropriate training curriculum designed for trained AED users who are members of the general public, and a training curriculum designed for trained AED users who are health professionals.
