Summary

AED acquirers are responsible for ensuring expected users are trained in CPR/AED and must notify EMS of the AED's location and type.

Medical oversight by a licensed physician is required to ensure proper training, EMS notification, and AED maintenance. The AED must be maintained and tested according to the manufacturer's operational guidelines.

Good Samaritan protection from civil liability is extended to rescuers as well as owners or operators who install or provide an AED. This protection is also offered to medical directors of AED programs and CPR/AED trainers.

Each public high school in this state which has an interscholastic athletics program must have at least one functional AED on site at all times.

All students in grades 9-12 must be trained in CPR/AED, though certification is not required.

Such training shall include either of the following and shall incorporate into the instruction the psychomotor skills necessary to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use an automated external defibrillator. Certification is not required.

Ga. Code Ann., § 31-11-53.1 Training Recommendation; Registration Requirement Recommends that all persons who have access to or use an AED obtain appropriate training. The law requires all persons and entities possessing and maintaining an AED to notify the appropriate emergency medical services system of the existence and location of the AED prior to said defibrillator being placed in use. Also, all persons who use an automated external defibrillator must activate the emergency medical services system as soon as reasonably possible by calling 9-1-1 or the appropriate emergency telephone number upon use of the automated external defibrillator. Within a reasonable period of time, all persons who use an AED must make available a printed or electronically stored report to the licensed emergency medical services provider which transports the patient.

Code Ann., § 31-11-53.2 Training Requirement; Physician Requirement; Registration Requirement Any person or entity who acquires an AED must ensure that: (A) expected users of the automated external defibrillator receive training in CPR and AED use by a nationally recognized course; (B) the defibrillator is maintained and tested according to the manufacturer's operational guidelines; (C) there is involvement of a licensed physician or other person authorized by the composite board in the site's AED program to ensure compliance with requirements for training, notification, and maintenance; and (D) any person who renders emergency care or treatment to a person in cardiac arrest by using an AED activates the emergency medical services system as soon as possible and reports any clinical use of the AED to the licensed physician or other person authorized by the composite board who is supervising the program. Any person or entity who acquires an automated external defibrillator shall notify an agent of the emergency communications or vehicle dispatch center of the existence, location, and type of automated external defibrillator.
